CELEBRATE YOUR OWN SPARK OF INDIVIDUAL BRILLIANCE

CELEBRATE YOUR OWN SPARK OF INDIVIDUAL BRILLIANCE

By Dr. Yomi Garnett

Each of us was created to fulfill a unique purpose on this earthly plane. The divine has manifested in us in physical form to fulfill a definite purpose. Indeed, you have a unique gift or talent, and a unique way of expressing it. In other words, there is something that you can do better that anyone else in the whole world. What is more interesting, for every unique talent, and unique expression of that talent, there are also unique human needs.

In your quest for this definite purpose of yours, you must do three things:

{1} You must seek, find and acknowledge the divinity within you. The Book of Life says, “Is it not written in your law, I have said you are gods?” Prayer, Fasting and Meditation will aid you in this quest.

{2} You must identify and express your own unique talents. Every human (continue reading…)

How To Become An Excellent Public Speaker

How To Become An Excellent Public Speaker

By Dr. Yomi Garnett

“My own secret to effective public speaking is to consider it merely a way of sharing my thoughts, the public speech being, in real terms, only a modified form of conversation.”- Yomi Garnett

The Amazing Secret To Verbal Brilliance

Whether you are speaking publicly for the twentieth time, or whether you are doing it for the first time, for most people, it remains an exercise they approach with some trepidation and nervousness. Most people seem to think good speakers are in possession of some secret knowledge that makes them skillful in speaking. Nothing could be further from the truth. I speak, and I write for a living. This means that I’m constantly on the lecture circuit, all the year round, speaking to groups of people of very disparate backgrounds, and of every conceivable description and disposition.
Indeed, I do have a secret. It is, however, so simple as to border on the ridiculous. My secret is simply this: By a conscious act of my will, I regard each episode of public speaking as being no different from any other form of ordinary, day-to-day discourse. To put it in even simpler terms: I consider it merely a way of sharing my thoughts with other people.

Insist On Speaking Only Plain English

At any speaking engagement, anyone who is not truly communicating with his audience is merely engaging in ineffectual talk. Put in other words, the essence of the public speech is to communicate and not to impress. Make every effort to avoid the inflated word. The right word, which, more often than not, is the one with which your listeners are quite familiar, is most often a very simple word. For some inexplicable reason, most people have a tendency to throw in words that are either not in common usage, or even words that have only recently gained a certain popularity. I have just thrown in a perfect example with the uncommonly used word “inexplicable.” The word “unexplainable” would have sufficed, wouldn’t you agree? It would appear that people do this either to sound current and up-to-date, or simply to impress the audience. Unfortunately, some of these “big” words do nothing to improve our ability to communicate.
The human ego is also a factor in the tendency towards fancy language, with some speakers thinking that the bigger the words they use, the more important their subject matter and themselves appear. Try your utmost best to avoid pompous language. You will be better received and better understood if you avoid “trendy talk.”

Avoid “Empty” Words

These are also called ‘vacuous’ words, and they are words and noises that add nothing to what we are trying to say. They merely clutter up what we are trying to say, and this means they also clutter up what the audience is hearing. People use these words because they serve as ‘oral crutches,’ and can be handy when one is stalling. However, if we become dependent on them, falling back on (continue reading…)

Burn The Boats

BURN THE BOATS

A Masterstroke of Military Genius

By Dr. Yomi Garnett

“The Skillful Warrior leads his men into battle, like a man climbing a height and kicking away the ladder, he leads them deep into the territory of the feudal lords and releases the trigger. He burns his boats. He breaks his pots…”
– Sun-tzu, “The Art of War”

Burn the BoatsHernán Cortés, marqués del Valle de Oaxaca, was born in 1485. He was a Conquistador, Spanish for Conqueror. He overthrew the Aztec empire, and later won Mexico for the crown of Spain. He first set sail to the New World at the age of 19. King Charles I appointed him Governor of New Spain in 1522.

In the year 1519, Hernán Cortés, commanding a force of some 600 Spaniards, 16 horses and 11 boats, landed on a vast inland plateau called Mexico. He was about to embark on the conquest of an empire that was repository of one of the world’s richest treasure troves, with the greatest concentrations in one single geographical location, of Gold, Silver and precious Aztec Jewels.

But, with a force of six hundred ill-trained men, who hadn’t even a stitch of protective armor on, an attempt to subjugate such a vast empire could only have been considered, even in those capriciously violent days, an adventure of the most foolhardy proportions. Of even greater military significance was the fact that, for more than 600 years, conquistadors equipped with far bigger (continue reading…)

How To Lead A Stress-Free Life

How To Lead A Stress-Free Life

By Dr. Yomi Garnett

One lesson a man learns from Harvard Business School is that an executive is only as good as his health.” –

Jeffrey Archer(1976)

How true this is! The pre-eminent health topic amongst people with executive responsibility, in both the private and public sectors of the economy, the world over, is stress!
Beyond the common-place understanding and application of the word, stress is defined as the condition or state of coming under strain or pressure. The stress you feel is your response to a strong stimulus called a stressor. Stressors are therefore the circumstances that cause your stress.
Stress has, arguably, become the single most important health issue threatening the existence of man, and Chronic stress is directly linked to the leading causes of death like strokes and heart attack. The world over, every six hours, an adult between the ages of 35 and 60 years is dropping dead from the effects of stress, making the Sudden Death Syndrome a major fall-out of stress.

1. Manage Your Anger

365 Days of Wisdom by Dr. Yomi Garnett

The first step is to, by a conscious act of your will, resolutely decide not to give in to feelings of annoyance and anger when next they rear their heads. I would be the first person to admit that this can be a Herculean task, as anger is certainly one of man’s primordial and basic instincts. Having said that, it is now acknowledged that anger is the most tragic of the human emotions, and no one can quite achieve his true potential if he has the unfortunate tendency to feel and express frequent feelings of anger. The sane option to pursue when you feel victimized is simply to refuse to allow yourself to dissipate valuable energy and thought in what is, at best, a useless and unproductive emotional indulgence, and simply let go by consciously deciding not to get angry or upset. The management of anger is, indeed, a valuable skill that has been mastered by great men and women throughout the ages.

2. Use Your Breath To Diffuse Tension

The second strategy is a close ally of the first. When next you find yourself in a potentially stressful (continue reading…)
