When meeting with your prospect to discuss your product or service, remember….it’s not about you. Learn about the importance of exhibiting a customer-focused attitude. Practice identifying behaviors that strengthen or jeopardize customer relationships. Refine your methods, maintain your customer relationships, and you are on your way to making the sale.
You need to maintain connections in a way that you shows you care about them than you care about selling your product.
How To Maintain A Connection
How can you sell to your friends and family without compromising your relationships? Keep in mind, you are not trying to sell them something they don’t want. You are simply offering solutions to their problems.
Here are some guidelines for maintaining a connection with your friends and family:
-Be genuinely interested.
How do you normally show interested in this person? Do you joke around a lot or do you just get down to business right away? Since you already have a relationship with your friends and family and care about what they are
interested in, there is no need to change once you begin to talk to them about your business. Ask open-ended questions, listen carefully, and respond thoughtfully. If you do this, when a problem arises, you can offer them a solution as a trusted friend and advisor.
-Care about their needs.
Be respectful as you introduce your friends and family to your new business. They are busy with work, family and other activities, so make sure you are conscious of their time. When you call to setup an appointment or talk about your business, ask, “Is this a good time to talk?” Meet when it is convenient for them, not when it is most convenient for you.
When you truly care about your customer’s needs, you can offer product solutions they will be interested in. But more than that, if you can show interest in their needs, they will be more open and responsive to your solutions.
-Have a want-to-help attitude.
Demonstrate this attitude through your words and actions. Show concern for your family and friends and think of ways that your products can improve their lives. When you express a desire to help, they will know that you care and are interested in their lives. And when you have a want-to-help attitude, you will want to do more than just make a sale. You’ll want to help them make their lives better through the products you sell.
-Listen, listen, listen.
The most important part of maintaining a connection is listening. Listening is more than just hearing a customer. It involves a deeper understanding of what the customer is saying, and responding in ways that build connections and show your interest in their needs and desires. This means letting the customer do most of the talking.
Effective listening is a skill that takes effort and practice. The most successful people are skilled at detecting hidden or underlying customer needs that other people may not notice.
Maintaining connections is really all about being customer-focused. A customer-focused attitude means that your top priority is the customer because you care and you want to help.
