The Necessity of Stress
This morning, I went on my 3-mile run as I often do everyday. While on that run, I listened to a talk by the great Steve Harvey on the necessity of stress if you’re to fulfill your dreams. He gave several stories about his life and how what he went through while growing up has led to where he is today. He went through a lot of challenges, but all the bad things he went through worked out for good. He tells a story of when he was working at Ford and was one of those responsible for turning scrap metal into engine blocks. Before the scrap metal can become an engine block, it has to go through the furnace(a lot of heat and pressure). It is not a pretty sight when it is going through that furnace. However, at the end of the process, it comes out as a beautiful engine block that’s used to build the beautiful car that you see. You see, it had to go through the furnace(stress) in order to come up perfect.
I want you to realize this, you’re going to have major disappointments in life. Life is not a care-free ride. It is full of a lot of challenges, especially if you’re trying to accomplish something great. Someone wants said that “The road to success is always under construction.” ALWAYS! That’s just the way it is. There will be detours, STOP signs, pot holes in life. The key is to stay the
course and not give up when people tell you that you will never make it. That’s dirt thrown at you. The good news is that dirt has some minerals and manure in it and it is designed to provide you with the nutrients you need to grow.
You can get through your challenge. You can survive it. You will come out better than you went in. When you come under attack, and are tried, know that you will win. Some days it doesn’t look like you’re going to come out on top. I want you to know without a shadow of a doubt that you go through the fire and you won’t get burned. You’re going to grow through the fire. You can come on the other side victorious.
Go after your dreams right away. Don’t wait for the perfect time. There is no such thing. If you’re waiting for the right time to pursue your dreams, you’ll be waiting a long time. What is required is taking that leap of faith. Sometimes you may have to jump off a cliff to accomplish your dreams. That leap of faith may be required on more than one occassion of life. In order to be successful, you have to do some things that you’re uncomfortable with. Step out in faith.
Remember what Les Brown often says: “Leap and grow your wings on the way down.”
Put a huge bet on you and on your ability to achieve your goals. Throw all caution to the wind!
If you have a setback, know that you have the power to overcome it. If you make some mistakes, learn from them and try again. If you lose a job, you will find another, or create one. This is a time to use your talents, skills and resourcefulness to make a fundamental change and take your life to the next level. Remind yourself everyday that you are in it to win it. Do what you need to do to make it happen! You are your most valuable asset. You have the power within you to make a difference in your life and in the life of others. You have GREATNESS within you!
