Everyone gets pushed to the brink at some point in their lives. If you’re leading a risky life, getting pushed to your brink can be more dangerous than for others who may have more of a safety net. The cushion of life, the safety net, comes from not living on the edge. If you live life on the edge, then stumbling or falling down can often mean falling off a precipice, or falling off a bridge into whatever waters run below.
Life does not promise ease. Most people do get knocked around by the trials they face. Even the most successful people struggle. The key is to struggle for an outcome that benefits you.
Every day we live and every choice we make represents an opportunity to modify who we are. If we change our choices, then we change who we are. It is impossible to do good and not be good. It is impossible to be generous and not be a kind person.
It is important, most important, to approach life choices knowing this truth – if you have new thoughts, if you make new choices, you can change your life. Your past does not have to define your future. Your future defines your future. The choices you make going forward are the actions that define who you are.
Consider the choices you will make from today forward, from this moment forward, to be like the alluring warmth of sunshine. Make strong, positive choices, learn from mistakes you’ve made before, and then leave the burden of your past behind. Our choices add up to make our lives.
Most of us can identify at least one time in our lives when we have taken an action that does not support our overall goals. We all have done something that goes against how we see ourselves. We have all behaved in ways that do not promote our image or expectations of ourselves. The truth is that what we have done in the past does not define our future. We have the potential to make the change today that will open up ways to a better future.
The past is no prison. We can unlock ourselves from the mistakes we’ve made in the past and make new choices that will lead to a brighter future.
Starting today, identify one positive choice that you know you need to make in your life right now. Write your choice down. Define one step, however small, that you can take, today, to help bring this positive choice into reality in your life. Take this small step, today. Plan another small step for tomorrow, before you close your eyes tonight.
Make new choices
Move beyond your mistakes
Live your life in the light of day
- Realize that hiding suggests shame
- Understand that shame can be an important signal, and allow yourself to use any shame you feel – to provoke you to change the choices you make.
Remember: Your past does not have to define your future.
